UNITED KINGDOM: In the first of a series of election political broadcasts, the Conservative leader Winston Churchill went to startling lengths tonight to warn against voting Labour. He said: "I declare this to you from the bottom of my heart. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo - no doubt very humanely directed in the first place." Labour leaders accused him of "vile and vicious" tactics adopted in panic. However, Tory campaign managers remain confident of victory.

JAPAN: Two regiments of the 6th US Marine Divison land on Oruku Penninsula on Okinawa. They intend to out flank the Japanese and capture the heavily-defended Naha airfield.

CANADA: HMCS Levis commences her tropicalization refit at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

HMCS Haida, Huron and Iroquois depart Greenock for Halifax.

HMCS Annapolis is paid off.
