Allied leaders hail Normandy landings.

Allied leaders spoke with quiet confidence today of the D-Day landings. Asked by a reporter: "How do you feel about the progress of the invasion?" President Roosevelt">Roosevelt replied simply: "It's up to schedule." Then he smiled.

General de Gaulle broadcast to the French people: "The great battle has begun. After so much conflict, rage and grief the final clash ... is here. It is, of course, the battle of France." In London, Churchill">Churchill began his Commons address: "Many dangers and difficulties which this time last night appeared extremely formidable are behind us." Cheers resounded round the House.
