Slapton Sands

In early 1944 a series of exercises were held on the beaches of southern England to prepare troops for D-Day. On one of these exercises at Slapton Sands in Devon, German E-boats got in amongst the transports and caused over 800 Allied deaths.

These pictures show Slapton Sands as it is now, but they do give some idea of how closely they resemble Omaha Beach in Normandy. There are also memorials there to the US soldiers who lost their lives in the training exercises.
